Osimo is a charming town perched on a hill overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the Marche region of central Italy. With a population of approximately 35,000, it covers an area of 106 km2 and sits at an average altitude of 265 meters.

The city energy mix includes electricity, natural gas, district heating, and a substantial 23% share of renewable energy sources, primarily from photovoltaic panels. Osimo’s electrical network is uniquely structured with a single connection point to the national grid operated by TERNA S.p.A. The local distribution network hosts distributed generation plants for about 36 MWp. The high penetration of renewable energy has led to an overproduction of electricity within the local energy microgrid, resulting in excess energy being fed back into the national grid.

Demonstration actions

Leveraging user-friendly tools, Osimo seeks to establish an energy community that promotes the sharing of locally generated renewable energy:

Renewable Energy Training: Offer technical support to prosumers with clear instructions and user manuals on renewable energy technologies and their everyday applications.

Behavioral Change Campaigns: Launch initiatives to promote energy-saving behaviors, such as turning off lights and appliances when not in use and utilizing energy-efficient modes on devices.

Smart Grid Technology: Implement smart grid technology to optimise energy monitoring and enable demand-side management.

Data Collection and Analysis: Gather data on energy consumption to track progress and identify areas for improvement.

Energy Education: Provide energy education tools to help residents understand their energy consumption and identify ways to reduce costs.
